A sub committee in the Iowa House has given initial approval to the use of an oil derived from marijuana for the treatment of epilepsy.

It now moves on to the full House Ways and Means Committee.

The oil would have to be obtained from another state where it was extracted from marijuana

The idea of using the oil for medicinal purposes was thought to be dead for this year's legislative session but parents of children with epilepsy lobbied hard for the measure this spring.

The measure would still have to be approved at the committee level in both the Iowa House and Senate and approved by both chambers before it could ever finds its way to Governor Terry Branstad's desk for consideration.
