One of the oldest grocery stores in the Des Moines metro area is closing.

Dahl's Foods announced Friday that its store at 1208 Prospect in West Des Moines will be closing.  In a statement, CEO Craig Moore says with "the combination of the store's age and performance" it "doesn't make sense to continue to operate" the facility.  Moore says the company has "other successful operations that we want to invest in."

The Prospect store first opened in 1958.  It was one of the few properties that saw little renovation over the years, since it was sandwiched in between other commercial and residential properties.

Employees at the Prospect store have been offered positions at other locations. Pharmacy customers will be transferred to the Dahl's at EP True.  The E.P. True and Beaver Avenue Dahl's stores are slated for renovations, according to the company's news release.

Earlier, Dahl's announced the closing of newer stores in Ames and Ankeny and the sale of its properties to Associated Wholesale Grocers of Kansas City.
