A new poll for the governor's race in Iowa shows right now it's a close race and the same holds true in the U.S. Senate race.

While a lot of candidates will say a lot can change between now and election day,  the poll released Wednesday  by a group called Hickman Analyitics shows just a four point spread between Governor Terry Branstad at 47% and Democrat Jack Hatch at 43% among people who said they would definitely vote in November.

If the category is likely to vote then the spread is 50% for Branstad and 40% for Hatch.

The poll also asked questions about the U.S. Senate race and matchups between likely Democratic nominee Bruce Braley and Republican candidates Mark Jacobs and Joni Ernst.

The poll found if Jacobs is the G-O-P nominee the two candidates tie at 44%. If Ernst wins the nomination, Braley is ahead 48% to 41% among those who say they will definitely vote in the fall.

The poll talked with 500 people and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4%
