Proposal Made to Further Regulate Electonic Billiboards

Posted Monday, April 21st 2014 @ 1pm

Des Moines City Staff presented the city council Monday morning with some ideas for further regulating electronic billboards  in the city

The city council April 7th approved a moratorium on future development until new regulations could be established.

Concerns have been raised about visual clutter along some of the city's major corridors including Merle Hay Road

First Ward City Councilman Bill Gray said Merle Hay Road is the poster child for electronic signs run amuck.  He also is suggesting the city impose a tax on the signs on a montyhly basis.

The city staff recommendations would cover both electronic billboards and pole signs.

Residents and sign owners who commented at the informal council meeting said urged the city to treat small electronic signs differently than larger billboard operated by a few companies in the city.
