Sheriff's Department Employee Files Civil Rights Lawsuit

A Polk County Sheriff's Department employee has filed a lawsuit against the Sheriff, another superior  and the county civil service commission claiming his civil rights have been violated.

Dan Charleston is accusing Sheriff Bill McCarthy, and chief deputy Victor Munoz, of retaliating against him because Charleston ran against the sheriff in the 2012 election. 

Charleston's lawsuit  contends performance reviews were negatively effected and he was passed over for promotions.  He also contends he was subjected to harassment and political discrimmination.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. Distrioct Court in Des Moines contends the treatment violated Charleston's rights under the first and 14th amendments
