Weekend Metro Fatal Accidents- Update

Des Moines Police say a teenager died early Sunday morning in east Des Moines, just after 1am. 

Police say it appears 18 year old Phillip Tyshawn Simmons of Des Moines,  tried to jump on a slow moving freight train.  

Police believe Simmons had been waiting with friends at a rail crossing. They believe he fell while trying to climb aboard, and was caught beneath the train.

Several streets in the area of 2000 East Grand were closed for several hours during the investigation.  

 

A 21-year old man died Sunday night, while off-roading with friends south of Des Moines.  

Police say Matthew Blackford's Jeep became stuck in water, and while he tried to free the vehicle he fell into the water and became unresponsive. 

Police say Blackford's friends tried, unseccessfully to revive him.

 

West Des Moines Police are investigating the death of a person whose body was found beside a burning vehicle at 6:03am Sunday morning.  

After reports came in of a vehicle with smoke, police discovered the vehicle fully engulfed on Hoak Street, near 8th Street in West Des Moines, just south of Interstate 235.

The say a body was found on the ground near the vehicle. 

West Des Moines Police Sgt. Ken O'Brien says they have not determined the identity of the person.

He asks that anyone with any information to call Polk County Crime Stoppers at 515.223.1400 or the West Des Moines Police Department at 515.222.3321.
