The Ames Police Department says a human skull fragment found near the Skunk River last month is likely hundreds of years old.

Commander Geoff Huff says an examination by a forensic anthropologist indicates it belonged to a 25 to 45 year old woman, possibly of Native American ancestry.

Huff says this kind of discovery happens two or three times a year in Iowa.

The skull fragment was found on July 2nd on a sandbar in the Skunk River near Carr Pool.

Police say the remains will be turned over to the state archaeologist.
