Why Did The Creston Kids Think A KKK Photo Was Okay?

Five Creston football players have been kicked off the team after a photo on social media shows them dressed in KKK hoods next to a burning cross and a confederate flag.  One is holding a gun.

A couple of issues to address:  yes, the photo is not on school time, not on school grounds, and not directed at anyone.  But...I played high school football.  I understood that there was a code of conduct for players and I could be suspended or kicked off the team at any time for misconduct.

Second:  how does this happen?  It's important that our kids gain an understanding of civics and history AWAY from the current poisonous dialogue among our political class, which seeks to stoke racial division in hopes of gaining votes.
