A few links from this week's show:

  • Facebook's "trending" feature is an attempt to displace your local newspaper. I think it has a long way to go before it's truly ready for prime time
  • Amazon's price hike for Amazon Prime is a really interesting experiment in what economists call demand elasticity -- the consumer's sensitivity to changes in price. I wonder whether the $20 extra will really scare off potential subscribers. And I also wonder whether that $20 hike is Amazon's effort to really push the needle towards greater profitability. They don't make as much money as you might guess.
  • There's a measles outbreak in New York City, and you can be quite certain that anti-vaccination activists are to blame. The Internet allows people to circulate unfounded opinions and stupid scare tactics with great efficiency. That doesn't mean it's OK to participate. We need vaccines, and we need people to use them.
