The Iowa Senate has approved legislation that allows most medical uses of cannibis-except smoking.
The Senate bill, called the "Compassionate Use of Cannabis Act", authorizes the Iowa Department of Public Health to license between 4 and 12 medical cannabis manufacturers by next year and to license 12 dispensaries for medical cannabis by April 2, 2018 that must start operation by that July.
Senator Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale) said the legislation is "not about legalizing medical use of marijuana." He also put in a plea to the Iowa House to negotiate with them on the issue. House leaders have not come out openly in support of the legislation.
The measure passed the Iowa Senate on a 45 to 5 vote, it now goes to the Iowa House, and an uncertain fate.
