14 Iowa schools among best public schools in nation

DES MOINES, Iowa - 14 Iowa high schools get silver medals in the U.S. News and World Report Best Public High Schools in the nation.  That puts them in the top 11-percent of the more than 28-thousand schools evaluated.

The State of Iowa, which has one of the highest high school graduation rates in the nation, requires students to take the Iowa Assessments. 

Built into Iowa's state curriculum are lessons to provide students with what the state calls 21st century skills, which include civic, financial, health and technology literacy, as well as employment skills, according to the Iowa Department of Education.

DES MOINES AREA SILVER MEDAL SCHOOLS:  

  • Ames High School
  • Valley High School in West Des Moines
  • ADM Adel Desoto Minburn
  • Waukee
  • Johnston
  • Norwalk
  • Ankeny High 
  • Ankeny Centennial High 

CEDAR RAPIDS AREA SILVER MEDAL HIGH SCHOOLS:

  • West Liberty
  • Lin-Mar
  • Cedar Falls
  • Decorah 

DAVENPORT AREA SILVER MEDAL HIGH SCHOOLS:

  • Pleasant Valley Junior Senior High School

Many Iowa schools are in the 2018 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings, including the 14 silver medal schools and 104 bronze medal schools.
