DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Transportation is asking drivers to secure items being hauled after reports of furniture and appliances falling into intestate lanes.
In this new video, vehicles are seen dodging and finally hitting lawn chairs that fell onto I-235 in Des Moines.
A survey by AAA shows during a three year period, highway debris falling from vehicles and being kicked up off the pavement caused more than 200,000 crashes and at least 500 deaths.
Bonnie Castillo of the Iowa DOT says they've seen couches and even new appliances in the box that have fallen off of vehicles because they weren't properly secured.
She says that has caused accidents as other motorists brake to avoid hitting the debris and some fatal accidents as well on Iowa's interstate highways.
