Senator Schumer Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Pot Federally

Yes, it's a political move meant to appeal to younger voters and libertarians, but it's also historically signficant:  Sen. Chuck Schumer has introduced a new bill to decriminalize and regulate marijuana at the federal level.

The bill would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, where it is classified among drugs such as heroin and LSD.

Schumer's bill would direct a specific amount of tax revenue to a Treasury trust fund for the "small business concerns" of women and "socially and economically disadvantaged" individuals working in the marijuana industry.

Listeners of my show know that I've changed my mind on this issue:  I believe in the legalization of marijuana.  It's a simple matter of what how I want the police to spend their time.  I think we should look at it like alcohol:  I don't want law enforcement to be arresting someone for buying and possessing beer.  I DO want them arresting a person who drives drunk.  In other words, another person needs to become a danger to ME before valuable resources get invested in putting him in jail.

I ALSO believe that the nation will legalize pot eventually.  Some states have done so -  and the entire nation of Canada will legalize weed in October.
