DES MOINES, Iowa- A company at this year's World Food Prize events in Des Moines, is promoting vertical farming is the future.
Nick Starling, of Skyscraper Farm says vertical farming is the future of food security, and can be a global answer for areas where production is poor.
He says they make a building structure which combines living and working areas, with a vertical farm. He says they use recycled water and LEDs to supplement sunlight.
The company claims they use 99-percent less water than traditional farms, and produce multiple harvests each year.
Skyscraper Farm is currently in the permitting process in Virginia to build the company’s first structure. In addition to the sustainable indoor farm, the pilot design will include luxury condominiums, executive office spaces, and commercial tenants such as five-star restaurants.
