The Simpsons Will Drop "Apu"

Polling consistently shows that Americans hate political correctness.  I define "political correctness" as an attempt to squeal free speech by claiming that such speech offends someone.  The PROBLEM with that (as I think most Americans know) is that it puts ALL the power in the hands of those who have decided to be offended.  Speech must be silenced as soon as someone takes offense.

This is VERY apparent in the realm of humor.  Of course, a lot of humor is MEANT to offend.  In the place of material that's actually funny, we are now seeing "comedians" claim that political anger is funny.  (SPOILER:  it's not).

The Simpsons premiered in 1989 and so it offers the best example of the erosion of humor in service to political correctness.

One of the longest-tenured characters on "The Simpsons" will be no more according to reports. Apu, a convenience store owner voiced by Hank Azaria, has become a controversial figure because many believe him to be an inaccurate and hurtful portrayal of Indian-Americans. Many feel that the show hasn't addressed these concerns seriously.

Producer Adi Shankar, who does not work for the show, says he's been told by "multiple sources" that  Fox will “drop the Apu character altogether.”  In April, Adi had launched a spec script contest for “The Simpsons” to solve the controversy and produce a more politically correct script for the character.

Unfortunately, it seems he found a script that will never be used because sources ell Adi the decision to remove the character has already taken place. He notes, "They aren’t going to make a big deal out of it, or anything like that, but they’ll drop him altogether just to avoid the controversy.”
