Iowa Dems want Special Session to override veto on medical pot expansion

Iowa Democrats are calling on their legislative colleagues across the Isle to force a Special Session and override Governor's Kim Reynolds' veto on Medical Marijuana expansion in the State.

If the Governor had signed House File 732 into law, it would have removed the 3% cap on how much THC could be in a medical cannabis product and instead limited the amount of medical cannabis a patient can be prescribed at any given time. THC is the chemical that gives a user the high. The Bill passed the Iowa House, 96-3, and the Senate, 40-7.

“The governor’s last-minute veto was devastating to Iowans suffering from debilitating conditions like cancer, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease who worked for years to pass this legislation,” said Rep. John Forbes (D-Urbandale), at a press conference yesterday.

“But because they lived in Iowa, some died without access to effective medicines. Enough is enough. The 96 members of the Iowa House and the 40 members of the Iowa Senate who voted to help these Iowans must stand up and defend their votes.”

Meanwhile Speaker Linda Upmeyer said the House passed the Bill based on inaccurate information. “When that legislation first passed the House, it was done so based on what we now know was conflicting information,” she said in a statement yesterday. “While there were many good things in the bill, I don’t know if it has the consensus necessary at this point to override a veto, so a special session would be ill-advised.”

What do you think? Should they come back and force this law through?
