A non-profit group says it has discovered the graves of more than 30 marines and sailors from World War Two.
The graves were found earlier this year on the Pacific atoll of Tarawa, where more that a thousand Americans died in a pitched three-day battle with the Japanese in 1943. It’s considered one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The group, History Flight, has been working with the Pentagon and the Republic of Kiribati to find bodies previously thought unrecoverable. The newly discovered site is below the water table and workers have to use pumps to reach the remains.
The bodies are being taken to Hawaii for identification by Defense the POW/MIA Accounting Agency. A military forensic team will then work to identify them using dental records, DNA and other clues. The group estimates around 270 other bodies are still somewhere on Tarawa.
