Here's Iowa's Favorite Ice Cream Flavor

There's never been a better time to be a fan of ice cream in Iowa. There are a number of small businesses and food trucks popping up that offer locally produced small batch ice cream that is the best I've ever tasted. Have you tried dutch letter ice cream yet? How about an ice cream with roasted cherries and goat's milk?

July is National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day is coming up this Sunday (aka July 21st). That means lots of people will be enjoying a scoop or two (or five) to celebrate. We all have our own favorite flavors, but according to a new report from the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), America’s favorite is still vanilla, followed by chocolate, cookies n’ cream, mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, buttered pecan, cookie dough, strawberry, Moose Tracks and neapolitan. And yes, in that order.

While the IDFA doesn’t offer information about the source of its ranking, software company WorkWise came up with its own based on state-to-state Google search volume for different ice cream flavors. Their results are a little different, with vanilla coming in second behind cookies and cream in at number one. Chocolate, peppermint, and strawberry are tied for third on this list and fourth place is a 15-way tie.

The report also revealed a few unique choices: Connecticut’s number-one search was for beer ice cream, while those in Pennsylvania looked up teaberry, which is a minty flavor popular there. Flavor preferences aside, the research shows we’re all eating a lot of ice cream, with the average American consuming more than 23 pounds, or slightly less than five gallons, a year.

Iowa's favorite ice cream, according to Google search, is peppermint. I totally ascribe that to the peppermint squares available at the Iowa State Fair each year. When it comes down to the great "chocolate vs vanilla" debate, Iowans prefer chocolate. I'm glad to read that...because I think vanilla is kinda plain.
