The Des Moines Symphony will perform its second program of the season, Symphony in Sculpture, at7:30PM Saturday, October 12 & 2:30PM Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the Des Moines Civic Center (221 Walnut Street, Des Moines).
Ten years ago, the John & Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park opened to the public, forever changing the cultural landscape of central Iowa. On October 12 & 13, the Des Moines Symphony celebrates this artistic milestone with a suite from Symphony in Sculpture, originally commissioned by the Symphony to portray the sculptures in the park through music and film, and now updated to include three new additions to the Sculpture Park – including a musical evocation of Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE featuring the Heartland Youth Choir. The Symphony opens the concert with Mussorgsky’s unearthly tone poem A Night on Bald Mountain; then, after Symphony in Sculpture, the performance concludes with the exhilarating Scheherazade.
