I love going on cruises and usually end up taking one a year. Think about this: if flying temporarily in an airplane can make you sick, certainly an extended time on a cruise can do so as well. In order to stay healthy, there are certain foods that I avoid.
- Unpasteurized foods- Unpasteurized milk and cheeses can contain dangerous bacteria like salmonella, E. coli, and listeria, so beware.
- Water- Avoid tap water and stick to bottles, especially in the ports.
- Steak- Harmful bacteria may not be eliminated if hot foods aren’t cooked and maintained at 140-degrees.
- Condiments- Along with sauces, these may be left sitting out for a long time, which makes it easier for bacteria to grow.
- Seafood- It’s risky on a ship because of its quick expiration dates and storage requirements, and you don’t want to take a chance you’ll miss any of the fun with your cruise because you dared to eat the seafood.
- Sushi- Raw foods should be stored at at least 40-degrees, and if it’s been sitting out on a buffet for a long time, you may want to pass on the sushi.
