IOWA CITY, Iowa - An Iowa man accused of killing his wife was in-line to gain more than $2 million from her death.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports Roy C. Browning Jr. had no steady income and was falling deeper into debt when his wife of 43 years was stabbed to death on April 5.
Court records show JoEllen Browning had planned to meet with a banker to discuss the couple's drained savings account about an hour before she was found dead.
65-year-old JoEllen Browning was director of operating budgets at the University of Iowa Health Care.
Roy Browning Jr., who was her primary beneficiary, was charged in her death October 28th.
Police say JoEllen was found fatally stabbed inside her Iowa City house before she was able to discover that her husband had been diverting thousands of dollars to himself without her knowledge.
Browning Jr's attorney, Leon Spies, disputes law enforcement claims that Browning had no source of income.
