DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines police have confirmed that a man who was walking across a downtown street when he was hit by a dump truck on January 22 has died.
It took place at the intersection of 8th Street and Grand Avenue.
Fifty-year-old Michael Monkmeier, of Mitchellville, was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital for treatment of multiple injuries. Police say he has since died.
Officers say 71-year-old Jerry Bemer of Cedar Rapids was behind the wheel of the truck when it struck Monkmeier.
Bemer is charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, but police say those charges will be increased because of Monkmeier's death.
Officers did not say what those charges would be.
The crash remains under investigation.
