DES MOINES, Iowa - A closely watched proposal to allow college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness is moving through the state legislature.
Supporters say the bill helps student athletes access part of the billion-dollar industry they support with their talent.
Opponents say students already get full-ride scholarships and other campus perks.
The bill must pass in a House committee Friday to meet a deadline to continue forward.
Many states are looking at similar proposals after California allowed college athletes to make money off their names last year.
As with California, the legislation in Iowa wouldn't go into effect until 2023 in order to allow the NCAA and colleges and universities time to comply with its requirements.
