Iowa Lawmakers Look to Reestablish 72-Hour Abortion Waiting Period

DES MOINES, Iowa - Republicans in the Iowa Senate have proposed a 72-hour waiting period for abortions.

A first attempt to make the waiting period a law was struck down by the Iowa Supreme Court in 2018.

That landmark decision also found that the Iowa Constitution protects the right to an abortion.

The new bill would re-establish the waiting period, and add additional steps requiring women to get an ultrasound before they can have an abortion.

The proposal could see a vote in a committee this week before a Friday deadline for bills to see further action in this year's legislative session.

The bill is sponsored by Republican Senator Brad Zaun of Urbandale.
