ISU book tries to answer questions on video games, media violence

AMES, Iowa -- A group of Iowa State University researchers are hoping to make the murky waters of video games a little easier to navigate.

"We wanted to put it very clear language in just a single paragraph answer. Then, if you want more detail, we give more detail as well. People can get the answers they want in plain English" says ISU Psychology Professor Doug Gentile.

He says he and his colleagues also want to their guide, called "Game On! Sensible Answers about Video Games and Media Violence” to give parents more insight and a more nuanced assessment on the content of games.

"They want to do what's best for their kids, but if you just look to the popular media you're going to get 100 different answers. We wanted to bring together what can we really know from 60 years of science, and what don't we know" Gentile says.

Gentile says the guide's Q&A format is well-suited for anyone who wants clear answers and guidance on video games.
