Des Moines man wanted in deadly hit and run crash arrested in Illinois

DES MOINES, Iowa- A man police say a Des Moines man, who was involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash in January, has been arrested in Illinois.

Police say 41-year-old Isaias Flores-Morales is accused of driving a vehicle that hit 71-year-old Stephanie Markert, the night of January 30th in the 1200 block of 33rd Street in Des Moines.

Markert was taken to a Des Moines hospital, where she died of her injuries February 6th. She had been a house mother at Delta Gamma sorority at Drake University.

Witnesses told police Ms. Markert had been struck by an SUV, that fled and was abandoned a short distance away. Witnesses told police a male driver got out of the SUV, and drove away in a maroon-colored mini-van.

Police later found the van, but were unable to locate Flores-Morales, but were tipped that he fled Illinois, where he was arrested Thursday, and is in the Lake County, Illinois Jail.

Florest-Morales is facing charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Des Moines, Escape from Custody, No Drivers License, and No insurance.
