DES MOINES, Iowa - Two local men tried to fight a house fire themselves this morning. They pretty quickly gave up and called 911.
"They had a fire in the basement that him and his father tried to put out themselves with a garden hose, but were unsuccessful." Des Moines Fire Department Lieutenant Rick Thomas tells WHO Radio News.
"That's when they called the Fire Department. He said the basement was fully involved in fire at that time." Thomas says.
The two men and their dog got out okay, but the house at 420 East 24th Street, west of the Iowa State Fairgrounds is uninhabitable. Lieutenant Thomas says the Red Cross is helping the men.
