COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - Council Bluffs, Iowa is one of ten cities to receive funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development designed to help young people aging out of foster care.
6 News reports HUD Secretary Ben Carson announced Thursday that nearly $1.2 million was made available through the Foster Youth to Independence Initiative.
The Council Bluffs Municipal Housing Agency will receive $146,937.
Other cities receiving funding include Little Rock, Ark.; Hayward, Calif.; Gainesville, Fla.; Albany, Ga.; O'Fallon, Mo.; Missoula, Mont.; New York City; Klamath Falls, Ore.; and Houston.
The Foster Youth to Independence Initiative was announced in July of 2019. At that time, comments were made by Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley who is the founding member of the Senate Caucus on Foster Youth. The co-chair of that caucus is Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon.
On February 27th, HUD awarded $1.2 million to Omaha, Kearney and Gering through the Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency Service Coordinators. This is designed to help direct residents in public housing to job training, education and health and wellness programs.
