Iowa Legislature Not Scaling Back Activities Over Coronavirus

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa state legislature is not scaling back operations over the coronavirus.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver of Ankeny told the Des Moines Register that committee hearings will go on as planned next week.

There's also no restrictions to public access to the capitol.

Wednesday, Democratic Senator Rob Hogg of Cedar Rapids had called on the Legislature to suspend meeting until March 23rd.

Lawmakers face a deadline next Friday for the movement of most bills through committees.

Some other state legislatures are closing down as a precaution against coronavirus. Georgia announced Thursday it would suspend its legislative session indefinitely, while neighboring Illinios Wednesday cancelled its session for next week.

Whitver said Iowa lawmakers are consulting with Governor Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Health about how to proceed in light of the coronavirus outbreak.
