Iowa could see freezing temps and frost to start the weekend

JOHNSTON, Iowa -- An mid-spring cold snap could bring frost to much of Iowa late Friday night into early Saturday morning.

"Especially in the rural areas just outside of Des Moines, but even in the metro area itself we're going to see temperatures in the low to mid 30's. With a combination of light winds and clear skies frost is a definite possibility" says National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Fowle.

He says some parts of Northeast Iowa could see low temperatures in the upper 20's by early Saturday morning.

"Basically what we have is a large area of Canadian high pressure that's going to sink down and bring a batch of some really cool air for this time of year" Fowle says.

He says it's been a long time since Iowa's seen low temperatures this cold this late in May.

"The last time we've seen temperatures this cold was back in 1997 in the Des Moines area. That's the last time we hit freezing this late in the season" Fowle says.

The National Weather Service will put a freeze watch into effect late Friday night through early Saturday morning for Northern. Eastern, and Northeast Iowa.
