DES MOINES, Iowa - Parking meters in downtown Des Moines will be back in operation next Monday as the city starts bringing back procedures it suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The police department says the move is in accordance with Governor Kim Reynolds most recent orders to reopen businesses across the state.
The parking meters cost $1.25 an hour and are enforced Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Police are reminding downtown workers, residents and visitors that the city operates seven parking ramps that are less expensive than parking on the street. The City Ramps have two payment options – a daily rate or a monthly rate. They're available seven-days-a-week.
Other parking options being suggested include the bridges across the Des Moines River for Grand Avenue, Walnut Street, and Court Avenue, which have free spaces throughout the day.
In addition, there are areas of downtown that have meter rates of $0.25 and $0.75 per hour which can be paid for in 12 hour intervals all at once.
The DART D-Line bus operates from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 pm weekdays, and 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekends, offering free rides around the downtown area.
