DES MOINES, Iowa -- High school baseball and softball is going to be played in the Des Moines school district starting next month.
In an announcement on it's website, the Des Moines Public School District says practices will resume on Monday, June 1st with details being finalized for games to start June 15th.
The district says coaches and school activities directors will be responsible for making sure guidelines issued earlier this month by the Iowa Department of Education and Iowa Department of Public Health are being followed.
“This is a small step to re-engage some students with school and resume some level of our activities, but it is a step that we must all be very careful in taking,” says Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Ahart.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, and resuming part of the baseball and softball season is not a sign that it’s going to be business as usual now or in the near future" he says.
The school district also says facilities and concession stands will be closed, fan seating will be limited, and spectators will be required to wear face masks.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds lifted COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions on school sports earlier this month.
