Sen Grassley Co-sponsoring Republican Police Reform Bill

WASHINGTON, DC - Republican Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is vocally supporting his party's law enforcement reform bill.

The Des Moines Register reports Grassley is co-sponsoring the bill introduced Wednesday by Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only black U.S. Senator.

"I applaud their leadership on this issue, said Grassley.. "Democrats should stop the partisan attacks and instead spend their time working with us to find solutions. If the Iowa legislature can do it, we can too."

The list of co-sponsors to the JUSTICE Act (Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere) has expanded to include close to two-dozen Republican senators.

Democrats have criticized the bill as weak, and want to be allowed to offer amendments.

The Republican proposal uses incentives to encourage states to take action, while a Democratic plan seeks to set national standards. The Senate Democratic plan would ban choke holds, where as the Republican proposal would block federal funds if departments don't ban the practice on their own.

The "Plan for a More Perfect Union" unanimously passed by the Iowa legislature and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds bans choke holds unless the officers life is in danger.

Grassley said "Surely, if Democrats in Iowa can work with Republicans to find unanimity, we shouldn’t have any problems in the U.S. Congress passing something unanimously."
