DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Education is specifically not requiring face masks for teachers and students in the upcoming school year.
The Departments "Reopening Guidance for Schools" released Thursday instead calls for teaching to prevent bias for or against face masks.
The guidance differs from CDC recommendations stating that, "face coverings should be worn by staff and students (particularly older students) as feasible, and are most essential in times when physical distancing is difficult."
It does follow CDC guidelines to teach the washing of hands for 20 seconds with water and soap, and provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to employees in high risk situations.
The Iowa guidance also follows CDC guidelines to not require the screening of students and staff before entering a building.
Schools have been closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Kim Reynolds allowed voluntary summer activities and some sports to resume this month. All school activities may resume July 1.
