DES MOINES, Iowa - A federal law prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to people under age 21 from is now the law in Iowa.
Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a bill passed by the legislature that mirrors a Food and Drug Administration act signed by President Trump last December.
The bill raises the minimum age to purchase tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21. In doing so, the measure ensures Iowa will be able to enforce the law, and that the state will continue to receive federal funding of $3.2 million for state-run substance abuse programs.
The state's alcoholic beverages division will now develop a two-hour training program for employees who sell tobacco products. Cigarettes are still allowed to be sold from vending machines, but must be stamped with the age requirement.
