Iowa Approaching 30,000 COVID-19 Cases, Few Deaths Being Rported

DES MOINES, Iowa - The are 676 new cases of COVID-19 in Iowa as of Thursday at 10 a.m., and no additional deaths.

There are 29,966 total cases, as 6,177 tests were conducted Wednesday with a positive test rate for the day of 6.7 percent. There have been a total of 717 deaths statewide.

Daily reported deaths and hospitalizations have generally been falling over the past several weeks.

Iowa officials have acknowledged a rise in cases among adults age 18-40.

Governor Kim Reynolds said that age group has always led others, in terms of positive cases. The positive rate among this group has gone from 41-percent in April to 45-percent in May, and 55-percent this month, in June.

A total of 316,379 COVID-19 tests conducted in Iowa, and one-in-10 Iowans has been tested.

There have been 23,757 recoveries from the virus in the state. Governor Reynolds announced Tuesday that the metrics for determining recoveries was changed. Because of the change, the recovery rate has jumped from 62 percent earlier in the week to 80 percent Wednesday.

The state is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 21 long term care centers, up one from Wednesday. There have been 381 long term care center deaths, accounting for 62 percent of the state total.

There are 145 hospitalizations from the virus. There are 36 ICU patients with 18 on ventilators.

The numbers for the state only represent COVID-19 figures compiled by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Unreported cases and deaths could make the actual figures different.
