Urbandale School Planning to Open July 23rd With In-Person Classes

URBANDALE, Iowa - A Des Moines area year-round school plans to open in less than two weeks with in-person, on-site classes.

The Urbandale school board's approved the July 23rd start of classes at Rolling Green Elementary School with a face mask requirement for staff and students.

A letter sent to parents says the school could still move to a combination of on-site/online classes or strictly online learning, and a final assessment will be announced July 17th.

Currently, the school plans to spread out entrance and exit points to the building and disable drinking fountains. It will set-up bottle filling stations and allow students to bring bottled water.

Masks will not be worn during lunch, P.E. and recess, and the school will not be conducting temperature checks.

The plan for Rolling Green Elementary to open with on-site classes comes as President Trump and U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos have called for all schools to reopen with in-person learning in the fall.

Rolling Green Elementary is one of a handful of year-round schools in Iowa.
