WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - Families of students attending West Des Moines Schools will choose between online or on-site learning when its classes start August 26th.
The city's Board of Education has approved a hybrid plan that also requires students and staff to wear face coverings while in buildings.
A survey of parents showed nearly half - 48 percent - prefer to send their kids to physical classrooms full-time. More than 5,000 parents took part in the survey.
The hybrid plan calls on families to choose between online or on-site learning for the first semester. The West Des Moines District says changes in the COVID-19 pandemic could force it to change course at any time and restrict on-site learning. Meanwhile, the district says it'll have enhanced health and safety measures in place for on-site learning.
West Des Moines Schools says it will have more details for families this week. It held two public meetings through Zoom Monday night, where it encouraged public comments.
