DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines Public Schools is asking parents to register kids for class, even though the district doesn't have a plan conforming to Governor Kim Reynolds call for schools to be open half the time for in-person learning.
Des Moines Superintendent Thomas Ahart has sent a letter to parents, telling parents to choose between the online and hybrid online/on-site options. The district's Return to Learn plan allows for students to be in school buildings for a maximum of 1-to-2 days per week, short of Governor Reynolds guidance.
Ahart says if the district is required to make a change in its plan, parents who have registered their kids will be informed of the change.
The letter from Ahart also says Des Moines Public Schools is asking the Iowa Department of Education to acknowledge that the district is continuing its plan submitted to the state three weeks ago. Reynolds announced the requirement for in-person classes last Friday.
The deadline to registering at Des Moines Public Schools is July 31st.
Rolling Green Elementary School in Urbandale is scheduled to start classes Thursday. It's most recent plan was to start with online learning only.
