DES MOINES, Iowa - The signature accomplishment of former Iowa U.S. Senator Tom Harkin is now in its 31st year.
Sunday marked the 30th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act that Harkin authored.
The Harkin Institute at Drake University held a social media gathering to celebrate the anniversary, which featured 10 questions about what the ADA has accomplished, and what still needs to be addressed for people with disabilities. The gathering was billed as a virtual rally.
"The ADA has opened doors, created opportunities and transformed lives," said Harkin. "Together we can help ensure a future of even greater inclusion..for all Americans."
Hundreds of comments and videos were posted on Twitter and Instagram. U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois posted a video paying tribute to the ADA. Duckworth lost both of her legs while serving as a Army helicopter pilot in the Iraq War. Her helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Iraqi insurgents in 2004.
