WINDSOR HEIGHTS, Iowa - Windsor Heights is the latest Des Moines metro city to ask residents to wear face coverings in public spaces.
The city council approved a resolution Monday urging face mask usage, following in the footsteps of Des Moines, Ankeny and Urbandale.
The mayors of Muscatine and Iowa City have gone further in issuing public face mask orders, which the state attorney general's office has determined they don't have the authority to do.
A number of faith and medical groups have asked Governor Kim Reynolds to issue a statewide mask order, which she has continually declined to call for. Reynolds says such an order would be impossible to enforce, noting other governors who have imposed them admit so.
Thirty-three states have some sort of face mask order in place.
The Windsor Heights City Council also voted to extend the closure of its Community Center through August 18th due to rising cases of COVID-19 in Polk County. The City's outdoor Pavilion is still available to rent at this time.
