DMPS votes for delayed start of year, waiver for virtual learning

After a unanimous vote, the Des Moines School Board will ask the Iowa Department of Education for a waiver to allowing them to start the school year with 100% online learning.

The board voted to move forward with Superintendent Thomas Ahart's recommendation of starting the year with full-time virtual learning, then moving toward a hybrid model when conditions in Polk County improved.

Exceptions to this plan include special education students and some courses at Central Campus.

The board also voted 7-0 to delay the first day of classes to September 8th.
