Former Iowa Gov Vilsack Appears From Cornfield at Democratic Convention

IOWA - Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack announced the state's delegate tally from a cornfield during Tuesday night's Democratic National Convention.

Vilsack and his wife, Christie, used the backdrop to call attention to the widespread damage from last week's powerful derecho storm.

There are still 30,000 Iowa customers without power from the storm as of early Wednesday morning.

Vilsack's comments came during the first virtual national party roll-call vote, which officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination for Joe Biden.

The formal nomination of the party's candidate typically takes place in a crowded convention hall floor. This year it was scheduled for Milwakee before the in-person convention was canceled over COVID-19 concerns.

The appearance of the Vilsacks in front of a cornfield was part of a series of video clips from across the country. It included shots of beaches and the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.
