CORALVILLE, Iowa - The reception center for adults being sent to prison in Iowa is not accepting inmates after a COVID-19 outbreak.
The Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville has 59 positive cases after conducting tests on all its inmates.
The center started a quarantine process last week after one incarcerated person tested positive.
The Department of Corrections says the suspension on admissions will be lifted when the virus is no longer spreading at the center.
The Iowa Medical and Classification Center serves as a temporary holding spot for inmates before they are assigned to other prisons in Iowa. It normally admits 65 inmates per week from jails.
A previous COVID-19 outbreak occurred at the state prison in Fort Dodge, where 351 inmates and 34 staff members have recovered from the virus.
