Iowa has first COVID-19 death of a child

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa has it's first death of a child caused by COVID-19.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says the child was under the age of five, and had significant underlying health conditions.

The department says the child died in June, and the case investigation was completed on August 6th by the State Medical Examiner.

IDPH says in a death of someone under anyone the age of 17 due to disease or other unnatural circumstances, the medical examiner performs a number of routine tests.

They say child’s death was publicly reported this weekend after notifying the family and ensuring the individual's identity would remain protected.

COVID-19 has killed 1,036 people in Iowa.
