Thousands in Eastern Iowa Still Without Internet After Derecho Storm

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Thousands of people in eastern Iowa still don't have internet access more than three weeks after last month's derecho storm.

MediaCom says about 12 percent of its customers in the area still don't have internet.

The company says it's taking so long to restore service because it had to wait for Alliant Energy to install temporary poles.

MediaCom is also repairing and replacing damaged fiber cables.

Some people are taking the delay in stride.

"People should know there's a lot of stuff down, and it's going to take a little while to get everything put back together," said Cedar Rapids resident Daniel Ruden, who spoke spoke to KCRG-TV. "I like to tell them that Rome wasn't built in a day. And this whole town, like, didn't get wired for internet in a day."
