DES MOINES, Iowa - The owners of Kum & Go stores want to build a soccer stadium on the former DICO property near downtown Des Moines.
The Krause Group sent a letter to the city council saying it would like to develop the toxic waste site into a stadium complex for a USL Championship pro soccer team.
The city council recently agreed to transfer ownership of the DICO site to the city for the purpose of cleanup and development.
The city council will take up the Krause Group proposal at its Monday meeting.
The Krause Group last year unveiled its plan to buy a USL franchise and build a $60 million stadium complex. The USL is a second highest level of the sport in the U.S., behind the MLS (Major League Soccer).The Krause Group currently operates the Des Moines Menace, which is in the fourth-tier of professional soccer in America.
The 43-acre DICO site sits just south of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway near the east bank of the Raccoon River. It has been tied up in legal battles for year as its owners have fought against pollution cleanup orders.
The site has been designated as a federal Superfund site.
