IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa says it will discipline students for improper COVID-19 conduct in bars and restaurants.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the school's policies allow it to discipline students for their conduct off-campus if they are not following public health guidelines- including at bars and restaurants.
UI policies specified in a student agreement require students to wear face coverings in public settings.
Bars and restaurants reopened in Johnson County last week after being closed for more than a month because of a virus outbreak when students returned to campus for the fall semester.
According to the university, there have been 2,056 self-reported coronavirus cases in the current semester. The school is reporting 12 new cases.
Among staff at UI, there are 4 new cases and total of 60 over the course of the semester.
The Press-Citizen reports UI has found 392 students in violation of university policy related to COVID-19 between the beginning of the semester and October 9th.
