DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa is at a high mark for nursing home outbreaks for COVID-19, but is still below the national average.
A new study by AARP shows there are shortages, however, in staffing and protective equipment at long term care centers.
The study shows more than 42 percent of nursing homes in Iowa don't have a seven-day supply of PPE. And nearly 40 percent of the homes have had a shortage of direct care workers.
In addition, the study shows Iowa nursing home staff have a higher rate of COVID-19 infections than the national average.
The AARP study looked at nursing home residents and staff in five categories with regard to COVID-19.I's data were analyzed by Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University.
