Iowa Metro Areas Among Highest in the Country for COVID-19 Surge

IOWA - The spike in Iowa's COVID-19 cases is being verified by national rankings.

Numbers compiled by the New York Times show Cedar Rapids has the fastest growing number of new cases in the country.

The Quad Cities is number seven followed by Waterloo at number eight. Also in the top 20 are Iowa City (11), Ames (15) and Des Moines (11).

In a separate category, Cedar Rapids has the sixth largest number of new COVID-19 cases in the country based on population, according to the New York Times rankings. It lists Dubuque as 11th and Waterloo as 13th.

A third category assembled by the Times places Sioux City at number two for metro areas that have had the highest cumulative case rates since the start of the outbreak. Dubuque ranks at number on that list.

The rankings are limited to metro areas across the a population of at least 50,000.
